To say we were looking forward to it is a little too understated. We'd seen the new-generation Ford Ranger overseas, and we hoped it would arrive here as soon as possible. But we have to admit that our adventurous side was counting on the most vitamin-packed version, the Raptor.
Because the word Raptor, if you don't already know, is synonymous with performance and off-roading at Ford. And that's just as true of the Ranger. The proof is that it will share its engine with that of the Bronco Raptor, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that will develop no less than 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.
All right, let's calm down and remain rational. But we have to admit we're having trouble. We could tell you about the regular Ranger, which boasts a new silhouette and even adds another engine, the 2.7-liter V6, under the hood in addition to the familiar one. But the Raptor is the Raptor.
Imagine, a truck the size of the Ranger, with its own prominent grille and Ford name, but lifted by Watts arm rear suspension, 2.5" Fox adaptive shocks, locking front and rear differentials and even a reinforced chassis for even more extreme touring.
We should also tell you that extra skid plates have been fitted all over the underside of the vehicle, it has BF Goodrich off-road tires and higher ground clearance on 33-inch wheels.
To make sure all this works in all conditions, it gets 360-degree cameras and Trail Control, a kind of off-road-oriented adaptive cruise control.
We don't want to sell the bear's skin before we've killed it, but we think the new Ford Ranger Raptor will be one of the most exciting trucks on the market this year. This doesn't mean we're neglecting the traditional Ford Ranger. It too is spectacular, well-equipped and comfortable.
It too has benefited from a number of improvements in this new generation. But we can't help it: when we talk about Raptor, we talk about performance, and that excites us a little at Chartrand Ford!
